About our Bluebird Hearth

About

Welcome to our little homestead! Bluebird Hearth is a journey in and of itself. Bluebirds for my dad, who passed late May of 2024. While he was passing, we had bluebirds visit. Then a few short weeks later, we found our little homestead. While walking the grounds we had bluebirds following us. A beautiful sign from beyond the veil. Hearth pays homage to my ancestors and those that walked the earth before us.

Our Story

Where to start?! We have traveled and lived in quite a few places…. nothing ever felt like home. We then landed in central Virgina, in our RV with our four fur kids in tow. It took a good six months for us to realize what we truly wanted. A homestead on a little land in the mountains and create a village support system in our local community. That is the dream we set in motion to manifest. While it took a lot of patience, I’m grateful to say we made it. Our little Bluebird Hearth is a tiny bright blue cabin nestled in the mountains of northern Virginia. Here, we live in harmony with nature, taking nothing more than needed and always, always being grateful for our little piece of paradise.

Who we are

Matilda, here, the crazy dog mom behind the homestead musing. Matt and I have been together almost 16 years. Married almost 11 of those. I’ll lovingly refer to Matt mostly as either hubs or pawpa. We met on Myspace summer of 2008 and have been doing life together ever since. We have amazing moments, and we’ve had tower moments. Miraculously, we survived and thrived through it all. As a Pisces, I am a wonderer, my head is in the clouds, daydreaming and thinking of the amazing things we can do. Hubs is here to keep me anchored and practical. He has always been my rock to lean on and I wouldn’t want anyone else by my side. Whether traveling or doing this crazy homestead life, there is no one else I’d want by my side! Life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey along the way.

The girls

Magdalene and Laveena. The sassy sisters who are like oil and water. Polar opposites in every way but that’s part of their charm. Magda chose us about six years ago and I picked Laveena September 2022. Magda is my soul dog. Her and I have a beautiful connection. She’s my mini me. Laid back, chill and just wants to enjoy a simple peaceful life. Laveena is our “hood mama”. She’s spicy and fiery but then there is a “granny” side too. She is the loudest snorer and will be in bed by 8pm sharp. These girls love to dress to the nines and have a small wardrobe of tees and dresses. Both are adventures and love seeing the world!

The boys

Atticus and Forrest. Atticus was chosen and brought home around ten weeks old. From a wee fluff nugget to an eighty-pound baby bear, Atticus is our literal baby. It was beautiful experience raising him from a pup and seeing how well rounded he has become. Forrest is our special needs little guy. Right before Yule 2022, Husky Halfway House dropped him off as a foster kid for us. We scrambled to make sure he had a good holiday with original intentions of just fostering. But, within a month, we realized he was staying put. We made it official on March 1st- his birthday. These guys are besties. Atticus is a gentle giant with all of his sibbies but he pays extra attention to Forrest. Atticus loves adventures and his favorite thing is jumping waves at the ocean. Forrest adventures differently – whether it is his wheelchair, backpack, stroller or wagon – everything we do is Forrest approved!
